In 1987, Claire Michael was working for a large Sacramento homeowners association as an onsite manager. Her son Jay Michael was a successful sales manager with a large office supply company supervising 24 sales representatives, but had always harbored a dream to have his own business. As Claire continued to learn about the ins and outs of association management, she realized that this industry could be the ideal business opportunity for Jay to invest in. About that same time, Jay was offered a promotion which would have moved him to Bakersfield. Instead, they took the plunge and created “Michael & Son”.
Claire provided the hands-on management of the associations and Jay led the effort to connect with potential clients. As he learned the ropes about the essential needs of homeowners associations, he was able to steer Michael & Son into a solid base of unmatched value for every management fee received. It has always been the Michael philosophy to be proactive with management solutions for the Boards that hire them.
As time went by and the business became more successful, it became obvious that more help was needed. In 1989 Matt Michael, Jay’s brother, came on board and Michael & Son became Michael & Sons. Claire retired in 1995, but her sons continue to provide an outstanding service to the community.
Today the company serves almost thirty homeowners associations and employs three more property managers, a top-notch accounting manager, an accounts payable clerk and a dedicated office administrator. Michael & Sons never set out to be the biggest, however, by many criteria, they are the finest.
